Wichita is also known by its nickname, "The Air Capital," because of the strong presence of the aviation industry. A large amount of airplane assembly that happens in America takes place in Wichita. The Air Force is also strongly involved in the city, with operations at McConnell Air Force Base on the southeast side of town. The city has been named an "All-American City" three times in recent decades, and draws accolades for having the amenities of a big city with a small-town feel. Wichita's population is about 300,000 people inside city limits, but rises to half a million people if surrounding areas are included. Schools in Wichita enjoy a good reputation, especially those of neighboring cities and suburbs. In addition, there are strong private and parochial schools to choose from. Access to Wichita is easy, with Mid-Continent Airport serving travelers flying into the city. Several airlines have daily flights into Wichita. Amtrak trains to not directly service Wichita, but make their stops in Newton, a small town located just minutes north of city limits. The main road into Wichita is Interstate 35, which becomes the Kansas Turnpike within Kansas. Wichita is located about three hours from both Kansas City and Oklahoma City, and is two hours from the state capital, Topeka. Wichita boasts 225 days of sunshine every year, split between sunny summer days and snow-covered winters. The temperature averages 81 degrees in July, 60 degrees during October, 30 degrees in January, and a March average of 50 degrees. Rain and snow both fall at moderate levels.
