Wichita Colleges

The largest college in the Wichita area is Wichita State University, which is part of the Kansas Regents system. Wichita is located two hours from Manhattan, Kansas, home of Kansas State University, and two and a half hours from Lawrence, which is home to the University of Kansas. Aside from Wichita State, there are several other colleges within the metro area, including:

Butler Community College - is located in El Dorado, Kansas, in the northeast corner of the Wichita metro area. The school has an accredited two-year degree program, and fields athletic teams at the junior college level. The school's mascot is the Grizzly Bear. The school was founded in 1927, and currently enrolls almost 9,000 students. Dr. Jackie Vietti has served as president of the school since 1995. The on-campus dorms house only 377 students--many of Butler's students commute from within the Wichita area.

Friends University - Friends is a non-denominational Christian university located just minutes from downtown Wichita. It was established over 100 years ago by the Quakers, although they no longer operate the university. An emphasis is placed on small class sizes, and no class has more than 50 students enrolled. Friends offers a variety of degrees both in undergraduate and graduate studies, as well as several programs for adult students looking for complete a degree while employed. One unique program is the bachelor in zoo science degree, where students work with the Sedgwick County Zoo. Friends was named one of the 100 best college buys in America four years in a row by Institutional Research and Evaluation.

Newman University - Newman is located in downtown Wichita, and has been operating since 1933 as a Catholic university. Newman stresses small class sizes, with an average of 17 students to ever faculty member. Over 2,000 students are enrolled at Newman, and 99 percent of incoming freshman will receive scholarships from the University. Over 40 degrees are offered as well as athletic teams. The school is currently a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, but is attempting to be accepted into the NCAA as a Division II program.

Wichita State University - The largest school in the city is Wichita State University, which is located east of downtown. The school has NCAA Division I athletics in the Missouri Valley Conference, and fields a nationally-ranked baseball team annually. The school is over 100 years old, and the campus has grown to 330 acres. Enrollment at Wichita State is over 15,000 students. The average age of a student is 24, as half the students are full-time while the other half are part-time students that hold jobs elsewhere in the city. There are over 200 fields of study, and the University is overseen by president Donald Beggs, who has been president since 1999.
